SETU in partnership with AIB, today hosted the annual AIB Sustainability Awards, celebrating outstanding business ideas focused on environmental responsibility and innovation in Wexford.
Enda Shanahan has been crowned the overall winner for his compelling business focused on developing sustainable, high-quality, and dependable cultivation machinery designed to withstand tough Irish conditions. Delivering his pitch in a highly competitive, “Dragons’ Den”- style format, fourth-year Sustainable Farm Management student Shanahan highlighted how his business aligns with the growing global emphasis on environmental stewardship and cost-efficient farming practices.
“The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten,” he said.
The judging panel consisted of leading industry experts: Keith Groarke (AIB Wexford Branch Manager), Mick Redmond (AIB Business Customer Advisor), and Patrick Whelan (SETU Sustainability Award Winner 2024).
"The quality of presentations this year was exceptionally high, demonstrating a deep commitment to sustainable business practices among our students," said Keith Groarke (AIB).
"Enda has shown the product's ability to deliver reduced operational costs and long term investment value, addressing the primary financial concern of farmers," said Mick Redmond (AIB).
"Enda's business solves both an economic and an ecological problem, which is essential for modern farm sustainability- the efficiency and lower input dependency places his business perfectly to capture significant market share," said Catriona O'Sullivan (SETU).
"Enda's concept stood out for its clear commercial viability and its potential to drive consumer behavioural change by directly incentivizing green choices. We offer our warmest congratulations to Enda and his lecturer, Catriona O'Sullivan, on this fantastic achievement," said Keith Groarke (AIB).
Enda competed against three other impressive finalists: Xinyue Ren, Benjarad Geeta Mitchell and Tomas Kearney, all of whom presented outstanding sustainability business ideas. The AIB SETU Sustainability Awards aim to encourage and recognise students who integrate environmental consciousness and sustainable development into their future business planning.
