SETU hosted the annual Global Student Orientation on 4 and 5 September.
International students from across the globe arrived at the University’s campuses for a fun-filled Orientation Programme that provided them with all the support and necessary information needed as they embark on their studies.
A warm welcome
During the cross-campus International Orientation Programme, students were given tours of SETU’s campuses, hearing first-hand from academic staff, student ambassadors and peer mentors about student life at the University.
Students enjoyed fun-filled events where they had the opportunity to make new friends from among their global classmates.
The beginning of an exciting journey
Welcoming the students to SETU, Dr Patricia Mulcahy, Vice President for Global Partnerships, said, “I’m pleased to welcome our new international students to SETU. Each of you has made the exciting decision to study abroad, an experience that will significantly enhance your academic career."
She continued, “As you study alongside students from a variety of different nationalities and engage with the different academics at an Irish university, you will enhance your learning network and foster new friendships. I wish you a great start to the academic year and hope you thoroughly enjoy your time with us at SETU. The SETU community is greatly enriched by having you here.”
Learning about SETU’s facilities and supports
During orientation students received information from SETU’s various departments, including Sport, Computing Services, the Library team, and Students’ Union. Each department met with attendees to fill them in on the support available to them as SETU students. Each group learned more about student counselling, computer services, clubs and societies and more.
An introduction into Irish Culture
Students took part in Irish dancing lessons, getting first-hand experience of Ireland’s traditional dance.
Attendees also enjoyed an introduction to GAA by the Sports department in Carlow, who demonstrated Ireland’s national sports at the University’s top-class facilities.
Speed-friending
During the orientation in both Carlow and Waterford, attendees had the opportunity to make new friends with their global classmates through a fun and interactive talking session. Students were paired to chat and learn about one another. On the sound of the buzzer, each pair changed, providing the opportunity to improve speaking skills and meet new people.
Campus tours
Each campus held campus tours to familiarise new students with the various buildings and facilities available to them at the University.
In Waterford, this was followed by a talk from representatives of MABs on financial advice, and from An Garda Siochana on personal safety.
