Researchers at SETU have secured funding for an innovative technology to reduce food waste, enhance supply chain efficiency, and promote sustainability across our global agri-food systems.
Supported by Enterprise Ireland, this technology, named Eye-Q is an AI-based digital tool designed to reduce food loss and waste at every stage of the supply chain, from farm to fork.
Interdisciplinary research team
The interdisciplinary team, based at SETU’s Department of Land Sciences, includes Dr Ultan Mc Carthy, Dr Anastasia Ktenioudaki, and Dr Yuanyuan Pu. The SETU team are supported by local enterprise and an interdisciplinary team of researchers including Dr Emily Crofton at Teagasc Ashtown Food Research Centre. Together, they bring extensive global expertise in food science, sustainability, and technological innovation.

Eye-Q: A disruptive solution to food waste
Eye-Q offers a fresh, disruptive approach to one of the most pressing issues in the global food systems i.e. food loss and waste. Its intuitive design and user-friendly interface empowers all actors to accurately and confidently make decisions regarding remaining shelf-life of fresh produce, actively reducing waste at every step of the supply chain.
“Given its simplicity and ease of use, Eye-Q enables everyone be a part of our mission to reduce food waste. Eye-Q directly responds to our current environmental challenges and consumer needs, while helping to align Ireland the UN Sustainable Development Goals and our recent revised Waste Framework Directive.”
Dr Anastasia Ktenioudaki Lecturer in the Department of Land Sciences at SETU.
Dr Ktenioudaki added, “Eye-Q will drive decision making towards support of our circular economy transition. By reducing waste, we can achieve a more sustainable and resilient food supply network.”
AI solutions for a sustainable food future
As an advanced AI solution, Eye-Q harnesses the power of digital innovation to optimise how food is produced, monitored, and delivered.
“We now live in an era where technology can truly transform the food system. Eye-Q has the potential to make food supply chains more efficient, more transparent, and significantly more sustainable.”
Dr Yuanyuan Pu Lecturer in Agri-Food ICT & Innovation at SETU.
Ireland as a global innovation leader
This project represents a key step in positioning Ireland as a global leader in sustainable agri-food innovation - driving impact through research, collaboration, and digital transformation. This work is supported by the Enterprise Ireland Commercialisation Fund Programme through project CF-2024-2360-A.
