Collaboration will support practical learning and create placement opportunities for SETU pharmacy students.
SETU and Clonmel Healthcare have established a collaboration to give pharmacy students practical experience with pharmaceutical products and greater insight into how medicines are managed and supplied. The collaboration will support SETU’s Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) programme, providing students with practical learning opportunities and greater exposure to the wider medicines sector.
With over 55 years of expertise, Clonmel Healthcare, headquartered in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, is an Irish pharmaceutical company and the Irish affiliate of international pharmaceutical company STADA. Its activities include the supply of a wide range of over-the-counter medicines, prescription pharmaceuticals, and innovative speciality medication solutions in areas such as Parkinsons Disease and Biosimilars. Its operations span areas such as regulatory affairs, supply chain, distribution, sales and marketing.
As part of the collaboration, Clonmel Healthcare will provide SETU with pharmaceutical products that are no longer intended for commercial or patient use, but which can be used for demonstration and educational purposes within the University’s teaching dispensary. This will allow pharmacy students to work with real-world examples in a controlled learning environment and develop familiarity with medicines and dispensing practice as part of their training. They will also provide opportunities for educational workshops on a number of focused therapeutic and service areas.
Clonmel Healthcare also provides placements for pharmacy students giving them first-hand experience of working within the pharmaceutical industry and exposure to areas including the regulatory environment in which medicines are managed and supplied.
“At SETU, we are committed to ensuring that our programmes are closely connected to the sectors and organisations our graduates will go on to shape. Clonmel Healthcare is a long-established Irish pharmaceutical company based here in the south east, making this collaboration particularly valuable for our University and our students.
By bringing industry experience into the learning environment and creating opportunities for students to gain experience within the company itself, this collaboration will strengthen the connection between academic learning and professional practice.”
Professor Harriet Dunbar-Morris Chief Academic Officer and Deputy President, SETU
“The role of the pharmacist continues to evolve, and it is important that our students understand both the breadth of the profession and the wider medicines sector in which they will work.
The demonstration products and potential educational workshops provided by Clonmel Healthcare will be a valuable addition to our teaching dispensary and programme, giving students the opportunity to learn using real examples of pharmaceutical products in a safe and controlled educational setting. Placement opportunities will complement this by giving students direct exposure to the pharmaceutical industry, including the regulatory and operational processes that support the supply of medicines.”
Dr Claire Lennon Head of Department of Pharmacy, SETU
We are delighted to formalise our collaboration with the University’s Master of Pharmacy programme. By combining academic excellence with industry expertise, we can support the education and development of future pharmacists and contribute to better healthcare for patients.”
Conor Booth Associate Director of Medical Affairs, Clonmel Healthcare
For SETU, the collaboration contributes to the development of an MPharm programme that combines academic and scientific learning with practical experience and engagement with the wider pharmacy profession.
