A passion for supporting children, young people and families shaped SETU graduate Blessing Sylvester’s decision to pursue a career in the health and social care sector.
Blessing completed the Master of Arts in Child, Youth and Family Studies at SETU, where she explored the issues affecting children, young people and families while developing a deeper understanding of child protection, family support and professional practice. The programme also prepared her for a career in the health and social care sector.
Learning beyond the classroom
Throughout the programme, Blessing studied areas including child development, family support, social policy, child protection and collaborative practice.
Seminars, presentations, workshops and educational visits helped her understand how classroom learning could be applied in professional settings. Visits to addiction support services and youth organisations were particularly valuable in broadening her awareness of social care and community work.
Assignments and projects focused on family support, child protection and children’s rights also strengthened Blessing’s interest in advocating for children and families experiencing vulnerability.
Developing a passion for children’s rights
Children’s Rights and Child Protection was one of the modules that had the greatest impact on Blessing during the programme.
“One of my favourite modules was Children’s Rights and Child Protection. I found it particularly interesting because it highlighted the importance of advocating for children’s rights and understanding the responsibilities professionals have in safeguarding children and young people. The module encouraged critical thinking and provided valuable insight into policy, legislation and best practice.”

Learning in a supportive SETU community
Alongside her academic development, Blessing valued the sense of community she experienced during her time at SETU.

Following her graduation, Blessing is looking forward to taking the next step in her professional journey.
“My goal is to continue working in the health and social care sector, supporting individuals and families to achieve their personal goals and improve their quality of life.
