Laois native, Joseph Power, graduated from SETU’s Higher Diploma in Science Computing (Systems and Information Technology Services) during the Carlow conferring ceremonies on 29 October.
Commitment to lifelong learning
Joseph’s educational and professional journey has been shaped by a commitment to lifelong learning and continuous development. Throughout his career, Joesph has completed several degrees with SETU, each allowing him to build strong foundations in his areas of interest.
Joseph shared, “My advice to any adult learners thinking of returning to education is to be confident. It is never too late to learn something new.”
With technology becoming increasingly central to the working world, Joseph returned to education to complete the Higher Diploma in Science Computing (Systems and Information Technologies Services at SETU’s campus in Carlow in 2025, after previously studying at the University in 2012.
The level 8 course is designed for graduates from non-computing disciplines by opening new doors to the thriving information technology sector. The qualification equips graduates to pursue dynamic roles within computing by equipping graduates with the essential skills and expertise to thrive in the digital world.

Joseph found the practical modules to be the most beneficial part of the course stating, “The practical modules allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world problems. The cloud computing and systems modules gave me confidence in modern technologies. The structured assignments helped me develop discipline and effective time management.”
Continuing, he said, “Overall, these modules transformed the way I approach technology and digital solutions in my work. I knew feel confident applying these skills directly to my professional role.”
From business management and law to computing
Joseph’s career began in printing and graphic design. He previously studied a bachelor's in management degree with SETU which equipped him to take on professional roles in leadership, innovation, and problem-solving. He later completed his Bachelor of Law (LLB) at SETU, allowing him to broaden his understanding of justice, governance, and analytical reasoning.
“SETU has supported every stage of my learning journey, fostering adaptability, curiosity and confidence. My time studying with the University has shown me that education is not just a path to advancement, but a lifelong pursuit of growth and purpose,” Joseph shared.
