EU-CONEXUS has an open call for SETU students to enter their climate-themed dystopian short story competition before December 31. SETU is a partner university of the EU-CONEXUS alliance.

The brief

Students are invited to imagine coastal regions that have undergone profound transformation following a significant event in the 2070s, as documented in a fictional newspaper article published 50 years from then. Society has adapted to these shifts, giving rise to a novel societal structure.

It is within this evolved coastal society that you are encouraged to write a short story. To maintain narrative coherence, the fictional work should align with current scientific knowledge, including fields such as earth sciences, biology, geography, and more. While watertight scientific accuracy is not essential, the content should show consistency with sound principles.

Deadline & winning entry

Submission guidelines specify that stories should be:

  • Between three and eight pages long
  • Written in French or English
  • Submitted in Word or PDF format
  • Double-spaced and in 12-point font.

The deadline for submission is Sunday, 31 December 2023. The top three winning stories will be selected by a jury based at La Rochelle Université. Winners will receive EU-CONEXUS goodies and have their story published across EU-CONEXUS platforms, which have a European audience. Stories can be submitted to [email protected]
