After completing a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Creative Computing at SETU, Waterford-native Emma Roche decided to further expand her knowledge and skills set by pursuing a Master of Science in Computer Science (Enterprise Software Systems).
On completing the programme, Emma reflected on a challenging but rewarding academic journey that has enhanced her technical capabilities and deepened her interest in backend development.

Shaping Academic Direction
“I had a solid foundation in front-end development and multimedia from my undergraduate studies,” Emma said, “but I knew I wanted to build a stronger understanding of the backend systems that power enterprise software.”
Before applying, Emma reached out to academic staff at SETU to gain more information about the course. After an informative call with the programme director to discuss course content and full and part time options, Emma decided to apply.
Exploring the potential of AI
Among the many highlights of the programme, the dissertation project stood out to Emma.
She said, “My research focused on how generative AI can be used for code migration, a highly relevant topic in today’s world. I enjoy hands-on work, so being able to explore this in a practical, applied way was a real highlight for me.”
The course offered a strong practical element, with assignments and project-based learning that encouraged real-world problem-solving alongside theoretical study.
Supportive environment and connections
Reflecting on the overall student experience, Emma described SETU as both accessible and supportive.
“The lecturers were approachable and genuinely invested in helping us succeed. My classmates were friendly and collaborative. There was a real sense of community at SETU. I formed lasting friendships during both my undergraduate and postgraduate years, which made the experience more enjoyable.”
