Kilkenny Road Campus, Carlow
Are you interested in the world of product design and are considering studying the BA (Hons) in Product Design Innovation programme at SETU? Join us at the Kilkenny Road Campus in Carlow for an engaging and hands-on experience to help you decide if a career in design is right for you.
What's involved?
Attendees will take part in a hands-on design session titled 'Design for Dexterity - Redesign a Kitchen Utensil'. In this session, you’ll redesign everyday kitchen utensils to make them easier to use for people with reduced grip strength or limited hand movement. You’ll try simulation gloves that mimic the challenges some people experience with conditions like arthritis or Parkinson’s, helping you understand what using basic utensils can feel like.
You’ll work through a simple design process:
- Test and explore where the difficulties are.
- Sketch quick improvement ideas - don't worry, no drawing skill needed.
- Make fast prototypes using modelling materials (including modelling clay).
- Try out your ideas and check if they feel more comfortable and easier to hold
- By the end, you’ll have a prototype you can test and refine—just like real product designers do.
