The aim of this programme is to provide post-graduate nurses and midwives with the specialist knowledge, clinical competencies, and leadership skills needed to deliver high-quality, patient-centred pre-assessment care while ensuring nationally recognized validation of their expertise in advanced decision-making and evidence-based practice.

Delivery:

This programme is delivered in a flexible blended mode. 

Qualification

Certificate in Clinical Pre-Assessment (10 credits, Level 8).

Cost

Applications for the 2027 intake:  

Sponsorship for the Certificate in Clinical Pre-assessment for Nurses and Midwives working in HSE and HSE funded services will be managed by the relevant NMPDUs/CNMEs.

Registered General Nurses or Midwives/ NMBI registered

Students will be required to provide evidence of:

  • Approval from the applicant’s line manager (ADoN or above) to participate on the course
  • Confirmation that the applicant will be employed or have access to work in the Pre-Assessment Unit for the duration of the programme.
  • Confirmation that a suitably qualified clinical practice supervisor is available to assess and support the applicant during the course.
  • Evidence of existing Level 7 academic qualification.
  • Applicants whose primary language is not English must submit evidence of competency in English. Please see our website for more details on English Requirements
  • Nurses and Midwives from non HSE and HSE funded organizations who work in a Pre-Assessment Unit may be offered a place on the course subject to meeting the course criteria and the availability of places

On successful completion of this programme students will have attained the first stage of the Professional Development Pathway for Registered Nurses working in Pre-Assessment Units in Ireland.  It is envisaged that Stage 2 will involve completing a level 9 award in Pre-Assessment Nursing which will offer recognition and transferability of knowledge and skills within the health service, ensuring they can become experienced at making complex decisions and evaluating practice.
