This Level 6 programme, delivered in partnership with Waterford and Wexford Education and Training Board (WWETB), is designed to provide learners with foundational skills in modern manufacturing and mechanical engineering technologies.

The programme combines practical and technical learning across 3D design, computer-aided manufacturing, quality systems, additive manufacturing and engineering materials. Learners develop the knowledge and skills required to support manufacturing operations, contribute to quality improvement activities and apply engineering principles within a workplace environment.

A strong emphasis is placed on applied learning, with learners completing a work-based project that integrates programme content with real workplace challenges and opportunities.

This programme provides a practical introduction to key technologies and processes used in modern manufacturing environments.

You will develop skills in 3D CAD modelling and technical drawing, learning how to create engineering designs, produce dimensioned drawings and evaluate designs for manufacture. The programme also examines quality management principles and introduces industry frameworks such as ISO 9001:2015, Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma.

Learners will explore additive manufacturing technologies for both metals and polymers, gaining an understanding of design requirements, process selection and the preparation of models for additive manufacturing applications. The programme also introduces Computer Numerical Control (CNC) programming, including the operation and programming of manufacturing equipment such as milling machines, lathes, press brakes and laser cutting systems.

A further focus is placed on engineering materials and finishing techniques. You will examine material properties, corrosion protection, mechanical performance and surface treatment processes, developing an understanding of material selection and performance within manufacturing environments.

The programme concludes with a work-based project that enables learners to apply their technical knowledge to a practical engineering challenge while developing report writing, presentation and problem-solving skills.

Typical participants on this programme are employees that have either manual or CNC machining experience. The programme will provide key skills in 3D design, CNC programming and quality control that will advance the operator from typical work setting operator to programming operator. For those seeking entry to the manufacturing sector, this programme provides the foundational requirements for these core manufacturing operations.

RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning)

All programmes are mapped to the SETU's Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy and applicants who wish to apply using this route can request the specific RPL for this programme.

SETU's RPL Policy offers clear pathways to the learner for recognition of previous learning undertaken and offer every credit to the learner in completing such learning.

The Programme Board will be responsible for the assessment of entry standards and applications as part of any RPL Process.

The programme supports professional development for those working in manufacturing, engineering and production environments who wish to enhance their technical knowledge and practical skills.

Graduates will develop competencies in CAD, CNC programming, additive manufacturing, quality systems and engineering materials that can be applied across a range of manufacturing and engineering roles. The programme is particularly valuable for experienced operators seeking to strengthen their engineering knowledge and contribute more effectively within manufacturing operations.

Successful completion of the programme provides a pathway to further study in engineering and related disciplines. Graduates may apply for entry to additional engineering programmes and minor awards, and may be eligible for exemptions on selected modules within programmes such as mechanical engineering and aircraft systems, subject to institutional entry requirements and recognition processes.
