The Certificate in Energy Sustainability provides learners with a practical understanding of energy management, energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies.
Designed for professionals working in engineering, manufacturing, facilities management, construction, utilities and related sectors, the programme examines how organisations can reduce energy consumption, improve environmental performance and respond to evolving sustainability and regulatory requirements.
Through a combination of technical knowledge and applied learning, learners develop the skills to assess energy use, identify improvement opportunities and evaluate the role of renewable and low-carbon technologies in modern energy systems.
Funding and eligibility
This programme is approved under the Higher Education Authority (HEA) Micro-Credential Learner Fee Subsidy. A limited number of subsidised places are available, providing an 80% fee reduction for eligible applicants.

Offers for subsidised places are conditional upon meeting and evidencing the eligibility requirements. Applicants will be required to provide supporting documentation before the programme commences. If eligibility cannot be verified, or if incorrect information is provided, the subsidised place may be withdrawn and the full programme fee will apply.
The Learner Fee Subsidy is separate from Springboard+. Applications for subsidised places must be made through springboardcourses.ie.
Applicants who do not meet the subsidy criteria may still apply as self-funded learners.
It is important to note that if you are not eligible for a funded place, you can apply for a place on the course as a self financing student.
The programme will typically run over 12 weeks on one evening per week from 7pm to 10pm. It will be delivered online via our virtual learning environment, Blackboard. Please note that there is an end of module assessment that will take place onsite on our Carlow Campus which is worth 40%of the overall mark for the programme.
This programme explores the principles and practices that underpin sustainable energy management in organisations.
You will examine energy management systems and standards, including ISO 50001 and ISO 14001, and learn how these frameworks support energy efficiency and continuous improvement. The programme also introduces a range of renewable and emerging energy technologies, including solar, wind, biomass, bioenergy and combined heat and power systems.
A key focus of the programme is the practical evaluation of energy performance. You will learn how to assess energy consumption, conduct energy audits, identify energy-saving opportunities and evaluate the environmental and financial benefits of proposed improvements.
The programme also examines environmental legislation, emissions management and current energy policy, providing an understanding of the regulatory factors influencing energy and sustainability decisions. Through project work and case studies, learners apply this knowledge to real-world energy and sustainability challenges.
All applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Lifelong Learning reserves the right to require applicants to attend for an interview to determine their suitability for the programme
The programme supports professionals who wish to develop or enhance expertise in energy management, sustainability and environmental performance.
The knowledge and skills gained are relevant to roles in engineering, facilities management, manufacturing, utilities, construction, environmental services and sustainability management. Graduates will be able to contribute to energy efficiency initiatives, carbon reduction programmes and organisational sustainability strategies.
As a postgraduate qualification, the programme may also support progression to further study in energy management, sustainability, environmental management and related disciplines.
