The Certificate in Electrical Principles is a Level 6 programme designed to provide learners with a practical understanding of electrical systems, installations and safety principles. It is suitable for those working in maintenance, construction, facilities management, engineering support and related technical fields who wish to develop or strengthen their knowledge of electrical principles.
The programme combines electrical theory with practical application, enabling learners to understand how electrical systems operate and how they are installed, tested and maintained in accordance with industry standards. Delivered in a blended format, the course includes both online learning and practical onsite sessions, providing opportunities to apply concepts in a hands-on environment.
Please note that the programme includes an onsite end-of-module assessment held at the SETU Carlow campus.
This programme introduces the fundamental principles that underpin modern electrical installations and systems.
You will develop an understanding of direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) systems and examine how electrical currents are used in practical domestic, commercial and industrial applications. The programme explores electrical circuits, transformers, power calculations and power factor, providing a foundation for understanding how electrical networks operate.
Learners will gain an understanding of electrical installations and the final circuits commonly used in domestic and industrial environments. The programme examines the selection and installation of wiring systems, cable sizing principles, current-carrying capacities and electrical testing and inspection procedures.
A strong focus is placed on electrical safety, including fault protection, isolation procedures, earthing systems and safe working practices. Learners will also explore the Irish regulatory framework governing electrical installations, including ETCI regulations and industry standards.
The programme introduces industrial electrical control systems, including motor control circuits, three-phase motors, starters and variable speed drive technologies. Through practical learning activities, learners develop the knowledge required to understand, troubleshoot and work safely alongside modern electrical systems.
