The Certificate in Criminal Law 2 is a Level 8 programme designed for learners who wish to develop a deeper understanding of Irish criminal law and its application in contemporary legal contexts.
Building on foundational legal knowledge, the programme examines a range of criminal offences and legal defences, enabling learners to analyse complex legal issues and apply criminal law principles to practical scenarios. Delivered on a part-time basis through a blended learning format, the programme is suitable for professionals working in criminal justice, public administration, compliance, security and related fields, as well as those considering further legal study.
This programme explores key areas of Irish criminal law, focusing on the legal principles that govern criminal offences and criminal liability.
You will examine non-fatal offences against the person, including offences such as harassment, coercion, endangerment and false imprisonment, and consider how these offences are interpreted and applied within the Irish legal system. The programme also explores property and deception offences, including theft, robbery, burglary, fraud, criminal damage and arson.
Learners will develop an understanding of cybercrime and offences relating to information systems, examining how criminal law has evolved to address emerging technological challenges. The programme also provides an in-depth examination of criminal defences, including insanity, intoxication, duress, lawful use of force, mistake, consent and necessity.
Through case studies, legal analysis and problem-based learning, learners will strengthen their ability to interpret legislation, evaluate legal arguments and apply criminal law principles to realistic scenarios.
