The Certificate in Adult and Community Education (Level 9) is a 10-credit postgraduate programme that introduces the theory, policy and practice of adult and community education. The programme explores how adults learn, the role of education in supporting communities, and the principles that inform effective teaching, facilitation and programme development.

Learners will examine the historical and policy development of adult and community education in Ireland, critically engage with key educational theories, and explore contemporary issues that influence the sector. The programme is suitable for professionals working in education, community development, social care, youth work, workplace learning and related fields.

This certificate is a minor award within the MA in Child, Youth and Family Studies and may contribute 10 credits towards the Master's qualification.

The programme examines the development of adult and community education in Ireland, including its social, political and policy contexts. Learners will explore concepts such as formal, non-formal and informal learning, lifelong learning, and experiential learning, while engaging with the work of influential adult education theorists including Freire, Knowles, Mezirow, Rogers and Hooks.

A strong emphasis is placed on professional practice, including group facilitation, programme design, inclusive teaching approaches and evaluation of learning programmes. Learners will also consider emerging issues in adult and community education, including the impact of technology and ongoing developments within the profession.

Assessment is continuous and encourages learners to apply theory to practice through reflection, analysis and programme development activities.

All applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Lifelong Learning reserves the right to require applicants to attend for an interview to determine their suitability for the programme

This programme supports professional development for those working, or intending to work, in adult and community education, community development, social care, youth services, workplace learning, voluntary organisations and further or higher education.

Successful completion of the certificate provides 10 credits towards the MA in Child, Youth and Family Studies and may support further postgraduate study in education, community development, youth studies, social care and related disciplines.
