The Certificate in Addiction Studies is a Level 9 programme designed for professionals who wish to develop a deeper understanding of addiction, substance misuse and contemporary approaches to intervention and support.

The programme examines the complex factors that contribute to addiction and explores its impact on individuals, families, communities and wider society. Drawing on current research, policy and professional practice, learners develop the knowledge and critical skills required to engage effectively with addiction-related issues across a range of professional settings.

Delivered on a part-time basis and online, the programme is suitable for professionals working in health, social care, education, youth work, community development, criminal justice, counselling and related sectors.

This programme explores the theories, concepts and evidence that underpin the study of addiction and substance misuse.

You will examine a range of perspectives on addiction, including psychological, biological, social learning and family systems approaches, and develop an understanding of how different theories influence intervention and treatment models. The programme also explores the signs, symptoms and effects of substance misuse, including the impact of alcohol, prescription medication, illicit substances and poly-drug use.

Learners will evaluate contemporary intervention approaches and consider the strengths and limitations of a range of evidence-informed practices, including motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioural approaches and behaviour change models. The programme also examines national and international drug and alcohol policy, exploring how policy developments influence service provision and professional practice.

A significant focus is placed on the wider impact of addiction on families, children, communities and support networks. Through critical discussion and reflection, learners develop an understanding of the ethical, social and professional considerations that arise when working with individuals and communities affected by addiction.

All applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Lifelong Learning reserves the right to require applicants to attend for an interview to determine their suitability for the programme.

The programme supports professional development for those working in health, social care, community development, youth work, education, criminal justice, counselling and related services.

The knowledge and skills developed can enhance professional practice in roles involving support, intervention, advocacy, policy implementation and community-based services. Graduates will be equipped to critically evaluate addiction-related issues and apply evidence-informed approaches within their professional settings.

This programme forms part of the Master of Arts in Child, Youth and Family Studies. Learners who successfully complete the Certificate in Addiction Studies may wish to consider progressing to the full Level 9 Master's programme.
