The first year common science programmes in the departments of science and land sciences at South East Technological University’s (SETU) Waterford campus received the ‘Most impactful use of Pearson courseware or services’ award at the HE Innovate Awards 2022 held in London on 8 December this year.
Innovative teaching
This award was in recognition of the blended learning approach in the delivery of the programmes, in particular the chemistry, mathematics and physics modules. Rather than the traditional chalk and talk tutorials, the common science programmes at SETU Waterford use an integrated on-line tutorial system that is delivered in an IT room supported by 1 or 2 members of staff. These weekly formative tutorials allow students to apply or practice the material covered in class that week. Each student receives individual attention and help at tutorials.
According to Dr Evelyn Landers, Program leader and Common first science coordinator “This approach has increased student engagement, resulting in students who have more confidence. Overall, this has had a very positive impact on the first year student experience at SETU.”
As part of this award, a donation of €350 was made to the Solas Centre in Waterford city.
