The student will learn to critically applying Child Development Theory to contemporary circumstances in childhood. They will also demonstrate an awareness of the impact of contemporary stressors on children’s emotional development and be able to appraise the normative developmental trajectory in the context of the changing world of technology, childcare and education.
In addition, the student will demonstrate an awareness of the major mental health disorders in young people and the evidenced based treatment responses available.
This 10 credit module aims to explain the origins of mental distress in the context of the emotional development of the child by critically applying Child Development Theory to contemporary circumstances in childhood.
Delivery
16 hours Face to Face teaching and 18 hours Online Asynchronous Learning
Students will undertake an element of their teaching on line (80%) via primarily asynchronous and some synchronous modes. These will include lectures, online resources and workshops.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, a student will be able to:
1. Critically discuss the origins of mental distress in the context of the emotional development of the child. The facts, concepts, principles, theories and methods associated with children's mental health.. Critically apply Child Development Theory to contemporary circumstances in childhood within the current limits of theoretical and applied knowledge.
3. Evaluate the impact of contemporary stressors on children's emotional development with the identification, definition and resolution of novel, complex and research based solutions.
4. Critically examine the normative development trajectory in the context of the changing world of technology, childcare and education in order to make informed and effective decisions
5. Critically analyse the major health disorders in young people and the evidence based treatment responses available based on facts, concepts, principles, theories and methods.
6. Apply advanced research skills , constructively criticise, draw conclusions and offer recommendations on current anomalies in children's mental health supports.
7. Critically discuss the relevant legal and regulatory frameworks relating to the rights and protection of children
Candidates must have a Level 8 qualification in a cognate discipline
There is no licence to practice involved in any of the awards, but each will enhance the student’s knowledge of the specific areas of children’s and young people’s mental health.
