Confessions of an uncertain teacher with Dr Gabriel Gallagher.

More personal reflections on 32 years of teaching (and learning) at South East Technological University (SETU) –  Gabriel Gallagher will discuss how, and why, my teaching has evolved over that time and will endeavour to pass on a few (questionable) tips to newer lecturers.

It is hoped that this talk will prompt some debate about what we do as teachers and encourage others to share their thoughts and insights.

Dr Gallagher is a graduate of Queen's University, Belfast where he obtained a BSc in Pure and Applied Physics in 1984. He then did his doctorate at the University of Leeds in the area of Polymer Physics. His thesis was titled "Mechanical Properties and Morphology of Oriented Polymer Blends". On completing his thesis, Gabriel worked for two years as a Chemical Physicist at BP Research Research Centre in Sunbury-on-Thames. In 1990, he returned to Ireland to take up a position as a Lecturer in Physics at Cork RTC before moving to SETU in 1991. Since arriving in SETU he has taught on a wide range of courses and has been course leader on both the HC Glass Technology and the HC in Multimedia.

He is currently a member of the Environmental Radiation Research Group at SETU with a particular interest in minimum detectable activity (MDA).
