What is the BEng (Hons) in Electronic Engineering?

The BEng (Hons) in Electronic Engineering is a full-time, four-year honours degree available through the Engineering Common Entry Route at South East Technological University. The course is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in electronic systems, circuit design, embedded technologies, automation, communications, and modern engineering problem-solving.

Throughout the programme, students develop both theoretical knowledge and practical, industry-focused skills through laboratory work, project-based learning, and real-world engineering applications. The course is recognised by Engineers Ireland, helping to prepare graduates for a wide range of careers within the electronics, manufacturing, automation, pharmaceutical, energy, and technology sectors.

Industrial Studies and Placement

A key feature of the programme is its strong emphasis on industry engagement and professional development. In Year 3, Semester 6, students undertake a structured industry placement from mid-February to mid-August within an electronics or engineering-related company. Before beginning placement, students complete an intensive preparation programme covering Health & Safety, Resource Management, and Engineering Ethics, ensuring they are ready for the professional workplace environment.

Students on the programme have previously completed placements with leading national and international companies including ABB, Abbott, Analog Devices, Bausch & Lomb, Braun, Datapac, EMC, Ericsson, ESB, GEA Automation, Honeywell, Intel, Janssen Pharmaceutical, Kromberg & Schubert, Merck Sharp & Dohme, Sanmina-SCI, and Schering Plough. These placements provide valuable hands-on experience, industry connections, and insight into modern engineering practices, often leading to graduate employment opportunities following completion of the degree.
