These new awards under SETU’s fully funded PhD programme will provide research and development training for highly skilled graduates leading to the award of a PhD

South East Technological University (SETU) is delighted to announce 30 new awards under the SETU PhD Scholarship Programme 2023.

The SETU PhD Scholarship programme aims to promote high quality, innovative research, providing research and development training for highly skilled graduates leading to the award of a PhD, while also supporting the increase in PhD numbers at SETU, in line with national priorities.

The call officially launched on the 27 February 2023, received over 90 expressions of interest to supervise PhD students from academic and research staff members. Subsequently SETU received 66 full applications, which were sent for expert external review. The University is now proud to announce 30 projects to be advertised to interested PhD candidates across Ireland and Europe.

The SETU PhD scholarships have been designed to encapsulate the requirements of impactful research across a broad spectrum of disciplines and industries, with programmes in such areas as applied engineering, life science, cyber security, business, policy, material science, bioenvironmental science, education and technology, and health and rehabilitation. The project topics are varied and cover several disciplines, across all campuses. 

Speaking of the initiative, SETU President Prof Veronica Campbell said, “SETU will transform access to education and research. The culture of innovation stems from interdisciplinary research, the breaking down of traditional academic and research siloes to address the needs of society, identifying problems that need solutions as well as opportunities to address quality of life issues. We continue to focus and develop our research strengths whilst constantly building capacity, competence and capability in new and evolving fields of research through scholarships initiatives such as these.”

The scholarships were awarded on a competitive basis. Recruitment will occur between 09 June 2023 to 28 August 2023 with students commencing in September this year.

Student stipends are set at €18,500 plus tuition fees and a budget for research expenses of €2,000/ €3,000 per annum for 4 years.

To qualify interested student applicants should hold or expect to attain, an Honours Degree (minimum 2:1) in a related discipline. Applicants whose first language is not English must submit evidence of competency in English, please see SETU’s English Language Requirements here page 7 for details.
