Overview

This programme is designed to meet the needs of students who wish to gain an introduction to the world of graphic design, offering them an opportunity to study design principles, digital illustration and imaging.

Aim:
This programme trains students in design principles, digital illustration and imaging. The student will be introduced to a number of basic digital processes including drawing, selections, transforming, colour and scanning, downloading, uploading and printing images. The students will learn the appropriate methods of formatting and saving images. They will be given instruction on the functions of manipulation tools and their applications.

On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to:

LO1 Identify and operate effectively using the design principles, and examine how they integrated in the design cycle, process and project life cycle 

LO2 Develop an set of technical and design skills that allow for the designs and development of bespoke design assets and solutions to various design problems 

LO3 Create a design driven portfolio of work that showcases the learners skills and ability to create effective design solutions. Create a portfolio that is industry of industry standard and relevant to current design trends and style. 

LO4 Employ a critical and reflective approach to design and working in a studio environment. Develop a critical approach and process to critiquing the learners work and that of a large design collective. 

LO5 Work effectively as a independent designer, and engage where appropriate with large group projects, processes and critiques.

Delivery

The course is blended with some onsite attendance required

The programme aim is develop a deep knowledge of the design process, principles and operations as used in the field of graphic design. Develop an in-depth skill set in the area of image creation, manipulation, digital illustration, typography, layout, and digital media creation. Work in a critical and conceptual manner to develop bespoke creative solution to various design problems. Work in a shared studio based environment, individually and as part of a creative team.

Design Principles 

Point, line and area, visual emphasis, balance, scale/proportion, symmetry/asymmetry 

Typography 

Typeface and family, type personality, spacing, readability and legibility, emphasis and hierarchy 

Layout 

Paper sizes and formats, styles of layout, tone, pace and contrast, navigation, grids 

Design Process 

Message, ideas and conceptualisation, audience

Graphics

 Integration into design, choice of graphic, file formats, image and word

Legal issues in Design

 Intellectual property, copyright

Entry Requirements

All applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Lifelong Learning reserves the right to require applicants to attend for an interview to determine their suitability for the programme

Student can build on this by taking a module on Web design to gain a 20 credit Certificate in Digital Media
