Certificate in Employment Law 2

Employment law in the Republic of Ireland is governed by common law, statutory provisions and a range of fundamental rights enshrined in the Irish Constitution. In addition, European Community legislation and decisions from the Court of Justice of the European Union apply to the employment relationship. The objective of this programme is to acquaint participants with a comprehensive knowledge of the main terms and conditions of employment and to assist the student to develop the analytical skills required to apply their legal knowledge to various scenarios. On completion of the course learners will be able to identify and explain the main terms and conditions of employment and the legislation which impacts upon those terms. They will develop their ability to demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of both the common law and legislative duties of employers as regards health and safety in the workplace, and be able to assess and critically evaluate the impact of these duties upon the Irish workplace. Students will be able to demonstrate an ability to identify and discuss the various types of dismissal in Ireland. In particular, they should be able to apply their knowledge of dismissals law to problem scenarios/case studies. Learners will develop a basic understanding of Industrial Relations Law in Ireland. There will be a strong emphasis on independent learning and students will develop a strong and autonomous work and learning practices.

All applicants will considered on a case-by-case basis. Lifelong Learning reserves the right to require applicants to attend for an interview to determine their suitability for the course.
