Certificate in Employment Law 1

Employment law in the Republic of Ireland is governed by common law, statutory provisions and a range of fundamental rights enshrined in the Irish Constitution. In addition, European Community legislation and decisions from the Court of Justice of the European Union apply to the employment relationship. The objective of this programme is to acquaint participants with a comprehensive knowledge of the leading principles of employment law and to assist the student to develop the analytical skills required to apply their legal knowledge to various scenarios. On completion of the course learners will be able distinguish between employees and independent contractors and different types of employee status, and demonstrate a comprehension of the importance of that distinction. Students will be able to demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the laws which affect the recruitment process and be able to assess and evaluate the impact of these laws upon that process. They will develop the knowledge to assess and discuss the impact of employment equality law on the Irish workplace. They will be able to understand and explain the constituent elements of an employment contract and the law relating to same and appreciate the different fora for resolving disputes. There is a strong emphasis on self-directed learning on the course. The course is highly practical applying case law to real life situations, taught by lecturers with practical experience of these situations.

All applicants will considered on a case-by-case basis. Lifelong Learning reserves the right to require applicants to attend for an interview to determine their suitability for the course.
