Overview
The Irish population was 4.7 million in 2016, but the CSO expects this to grow to 5.8 million by 2036. By 2026, it is expected that the population with a disability will increase by roughly 20 per cent. One-third of this increase is due to the increased size of the population and two-thirds of the increase is due to the ageing of the population.
Research by the NDA for the HSE estimates that by 2026 Ireland will need to increase the HSE health and social care budget by a third to cover the increased population living with a disability. NDA (National Disability Authority) Factsheet: Disability Statistics briefing information.
This certificate programme is designed for participant exploration of the various theoretical principles that underpin working with people with disabilities, with a rights-based, citizenship and equality agenda.
It expands the learner's knowledge regarding impairments and disability issues and explores the role and function of inter-agency and multidisciplinary work and evaluates a range of frameworks in the design of person-centred programmes with clients.
Entry Requirements
All applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Lifelong Learning reserves the right to require applicants to attend for an interview to determine their suitability for the programme.
