Biography
Dr. Martina Gooney obtained a BSc in Biomedical Science from University College Cork and completed her PhD at Trinity College, Dublin. Her PhD research involved “A study of the cellular mechanisms underlying the role of brain-derived neurotrophic factor in synaptic plasticity”.
In 2001, Martina took up her first academic appointment as a lecturer in Anatomy and Physiology in Waterford Institute of Technology. During her time in WIT, she has lectured in both the Department of Chemical and life Sciences and the Department of Nursing. She is a member of the Research Ethics Committee at WIT since 2011.
Dr. Gooney has taught at undergraduate and post-graduate level for over 10 years. She has lectured in both the Department of Chemical and Life Sciences and the Department of Nursing. This has included teaching of practical sessions, co-ordination of modules, supervision of Diploma and Degree students undertaking research projects and co-ordinating the Physiology and Pathophysiology modules on pre- and post-registration nursing courses.
Principle areas of teaching:
Anatomy and Physiology
Pathophysiology
Medication Management
Biopharmaceutical Science
Research Methods
Teaching Award:
2008 Waterford Institute of Technology Teaching Excellence Award
During Dr. Gooney’s time at WIT, she has been involved in a number of research projects and has been actively involved in establishing the Biomedical Research Group. This group involves staff from WIT, clinicians from University Hospital Waterford and the Royal College of Surgeons. Her principle areas of research interest include the identification of biomarkers that are influenced by cancer and its treatment and the impact of radiotherapy on quality of life and symptom presentation.
She has supervised a number of research students to MSc and PhD level. Her research activity in WIT has led to awards of over €3 million in research funding from competitive national, EU and international funding.
Recent research projects and areas of research interest focus on:
Cancer Related Fatigue
Symptom clusters and biomarkers in women with breast cancer
Symptoms and tumour response following radiotherapy
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for patients receiving radiotherapy
Provision of Antenatal Care: A mixed method study
Views of Community Mental Health Nurses in Ireland to Nurse Prescribing
Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip
Compassion fatigue and burnout in health professionals
CODMISUSED (Over the counter codeine use, misuse and dependence) - FP7 funded.
Award for research:
Irish Health Care Awards. Healthcare Department Initiative Patient Safety Community Care Services for the safe storage of Methadone (Horan, A., Gooney, M., Van Hout, MC), HSE South and Waterford Institute of Technology.
