Mr John Casey

I have delivered modules across almost the entire School of Business portfolio and at all levels on the national qualification framework. Participant groups range from first year undergraduates to part-time post-experience adults.

Research Interests:

Accounting Education

My interest in accounting education stems from my own formation into the profession. I now have a unique view on the process from all sides: being involved as a lecturer, as a moderator of professional exams and at non-executive oversight level. This has recently broadened out into an interest in the funding aspects of higher education. Outputs include a text book in financial reporting for students undertaking professional accounting qualifications, journal papers and economic commentary.

Capital Markets/Financial Services

In line with my teaching and previous professional experience, I have maintained a keen interest in capital market research and the investment fund industry. Outputs include an introductory textbook in investment fund accounting, a variety of conference papers and the supervision of a number of master’s dissertations. 

Regional Economics

I am member of the South East Network for Economic and Social Research (SENSER), an independent research initiative of two research centres in Waterford Institute of Technology. SENSER brings together applied economics, finance, sociology and business researchers to improve the understanding of the South East of Ireland’s regional economy with a particular focus on the labour market and resource allocation decisions. Outputs include the annual South East Economic Monitor.

Taught Masters Research Supervision

Supervised in excess of 25 taught master’s research projects across a variety of projects. Project titles have included the following:

• Stock market reaction to Covid 19.
• A performance study on US equity funds (mean reversion or random walk).
• An investigation of the value impact of data breach announcements: evidence from the stock market.
• Using the chairman’s statement to detect earnings management.
• Effectiveness of regulation in the Irish property market: estate agents’ perspectives.
• An exploration of the emergence and impact of robo-advisors on the wealth management industry in Ireland, from the perception of financial advisors.
• Do more diversified financial institutions have a lower level of risk than more concentrated ones?
• The impact of OPEC conferences announcements on oil prices from 2005-2014.
• An investigation of market participant’s view of market wide sources of information in the Irish residential property sector.

I have acted as external examiner in accounting to a number of institutions including Letterkenny IT, UCC, NUI Maynooth and Cork IT.

I have been involved, and continue to be involved, in professional examination oversight on a variety of boards with a number of the professional accounting institutes
