Biography

Dr. Jacinta Byrne-Doran has been employed at SETU Waterford (Formerly Waterford Institute of Technology) since 1999 as a lecturer in Psychology. Within the School of Humanities, Dr. Byrne-Doran is involved in teaching psychology on undergraduate programmes and post graduate research supervision primarily. Research interests lie in the areas of interdiscipliniary research including maternal employment and work role conflict, the psychology of breastfeeding and the study of home education. International and national conference presentations to date have included a focus  on “Home Education in Ireland”, “Analyses of the Healthy organisation, employment and psychoanalytic theory” and “A qualitative study of working mothers in Ireland”.

Previous employment has incorporated a focus on both professional practice and academia including lecturing, training and independent consultancy in career guidance and counselling. Dr. Byrne-Doran’s professional and research interest in the qualitative nature of personal lives is complemented by her professional training as a counselling psychologist and her professional registration as a psychologist with The Psychological Society of Ireland and Charterd status with The British Psychological Society.

Research supervision completed: 

Project Title PhD - The Experience and Performance of 'Appropriate Femininity' by Teenage girls in Contemporary Ireland: Collision of Online and Offline Selves. – Co-supervision with a colleague in the Department of Applied Arts. Project began in 2012. The project transferred to PhD in 2015. Successful PhD Viva Voce completed in June 2018.

Project Title PhD --Changing Irish Childhoods - Lead supervisor on a Strand 1 funded research project for a Masters by Research for a successful candidate – This project began November 2008. Application was made for transfer to the PhD register in May 2011 for examination in June 2014. The student was successful in her PhD Viva Voce and graduated in January 2015.                                                                                        

Project Title MSc  - An IMS Learning Design Meta-model for Learners with Autism.-  Masters by research project. The student graduated in October 2008. (Co-supervision with a colleague in the Department of Computing and Quantitative Science, Waterford Institute of Technology.

Project Title MA - A Qualitative study of the lives of Older Men in Ireland.-  Funded project from Strand 1 funds The student graduated January 2011. (Co-supervision with a colleague in the School of Humanities Department of Applied Arts Waterford Institute of Technology)

Project Title MSc- The Design of Multimedia-Based Instruction to support the academic and social development of children with Autism. The student graduated in January 2010 with her Masters by research. (Co-supervision with a colleague in Department of Computing and Quantitative Science, Waterford Institute of Technology.)
