Biography
Dr Helen Foley is presently a Lecturer in the Department of , School of Business. After completing a Master of Business Studies in UCD in 1997, Helen lectured on the Bachelor of Commerce, in University College Dublin. In addition, as a facilitator, Helen has worked with Community Employment Supervisors in Waterford, Wexford and Tipperary. As an entrepreneur in the fitness sector, she worked with public and corporate groups.
Helen completed a Doctor of Philosophy in University College Cork in 2017. This research focused on the achievement of Global Sustainability and the role Education for Sustainable Development can have in the transition to a low carbon society. In 2021, Helen completed a Business Sustainability Management course, University of Cambridge.
Helen’s research interests focus on, achieving global sustainability. Within this context, she published an important article which, articulates a new framework for achieving Global Sustainability. This publication presents a clearer understanding of the barriers and actions needed in the challenge of achieving global sustainability. Additionally, Education for Sustainable Development plays a critical role in the transition to sustainability, within this context, Dr. Foley published an article focusing on the barriers preventing the implementation of education for sustainable development. More recently in 2021, Helen has been involved in research for the European Commission, mapping education in Europe relevant to sustainability.

Sight is precious, and river blindness is preventable. In terms of contributing to the prevention of river blindness Dr. Foley has raised 10,000 euros for Sight Savers International. This was achieved through the organisation of several sporting and charity events in the Waterford Community.
Dr. Foley have also raised 2,500 euros for the Hope Foundation, who focus on the housing and education of street children in India.
In relation of Policy change and the achievement of a low carbon society in Ireland, as an outcome of her PhD research, recommendation regarding more effective education for sustainable development within the formal education system in Ireland were communicated to the Department of Education and Skills.
