Biography
Garry Miley was born in Dublin and graduated from UCD in 1985 with a degree in architecture. He received his MUBC from UCD in 1999. From 1985 to 1996 Garry lived in New York working as an architect in commercial practise first with Roe/Eliseo and then with Richard Brodsky Architects. On his return to Ireland, Garry worked in the Architect’s Department of Limerick City Council where he was involved in major housing projects and urban design initiatives as well as overseeing the introduction of the Council’s building conservation programme in 2001. Since 2008 Garry has been teaching architectural studio, history and theory full time at SETU. He has also makes films and produces architecture themed videos for his Youtube channel.
Garry has been a full time lecturer in architecture at SETU since 2008. He has served as a guest reviewer/lecturer at the Éav&t in Paris, the Politecnico in Milan, the University of Limerick, University College Dublin and has also served as an external tutor for the School of Architecture at Oxford Brookes. His Udemy course 'Design Like An Architect' has a 4.7 rating with over eight hundred students participating.
In recent years Garry’s research has focused on architectural aesthetics, pedagogy in design studio and architectural historiography. He has delivered papers to the European Association of Architectural Educators and participated in presentations for the Architectural Humanities Research Association. His latest paper ‘A New Aesthetic for a New Bauhaus’ will appear in 2023 (Springer Nature). He has published regularly in Irish trade and print media over the years including for Architecture Ireland magazine.

Garry’s 2018 feature length drama ‘The Island of Evenings’ played in festivals in Europe and Ireland and was awarded runner up in the Best Foreign Film category of the Unrestricted View Film Festival in London in 2019. He regularly publishes videos on all things to do with architecture on his Youtube channel and he has previously presented architecture themed TV shows on RTE and the Discovery Network. During his time in New York Garry presented an Irish arts/music themed radio show on WNWK and also served on the Executive Committee of the Irish Immigration Reform Movement.
