Biography
Professor of Management Practice, WIT and Professor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Shanghai University China. I lecture in management practice, leadership, change and innovation. An experienced principal investigator (PI), research supervisor and mentor, I specialise in action research and longitudinal interpretive case methods. I study management capability development in small and medium sized enterprise (SME) with a particular interest in rural business and have engaged with over 1200 SMEs through my research. I am chair of the RIKON research group, who have secured over €10m in research funding since 2007, enabling significant longitudinal research projects. A Fulbright alum, I work closely with colleagues in Ireland, UK, Canada and USA on a number of funded research projects. I regularly contribute to management theory through publication in top tier international journals and contribute to the wider academic and practice communities.

Programme Development
Led the development of three key programs at the WIT School of Business; the Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA), the MBS in Change Management and the BSc in Retail Management. Each program was the first of its kind in Ireland, adopting the principles of best international practice and two were shortlisted at the gradireland annual program awards in 2010 (MBS in Change Management) and 2016 (DBA). Designed and co-manage the MBA organisational change program wherein we engage executives in work-based action research projects to help embed new knowledge in their organisations; guided 60+ MBA and MBS in Change action research projects to successful completion. Program development board member responsible for management practice and methodology modules on 18 separate undergraduate and postgraduate programs across the Institute.
Scholarly activity in Teaching & Learning
PI/ academic lead on a number of teaching and learning research projects including an entrepreneurial education growth hub project, a cross-institutional collaborative project studying small firm employee network capability development and three separate National Teaching and Learning Forum projects, focused on the dissemination of knowledge relating to the delivery of management practice programs using online simulation and blended learning tools. Intrinsically involved in the design and delivery of a range of research-informed executive and SME management practice programs, often in liaison with government and industry partners.

Founding member & senior researcher of the Research in Innovation, Knowledge, Organisations and Networks (RIKON) group; identified as an emergent research area in the South East Institutes’ joint submission to the HEA (2012) and as a key research group in the innovation in services and business processes (IOT Ireland website, 2013). RIKON has secured over €10m in funding, has engaged with over 1200 SMEs and has over 30 research students, consultants and colleagues working within the group, alongside three postdoctoral researchers, a research fellow and seven senior researchers. Notably, RIKON is one of the country’s leading facilitators of Enterprise-Ireland supported Innovation Vouchers and has liaised with over 350 new and small companies to help them develop their innovation capabilities, growth strategies and business management functions.
As a management practice specialist, I have been PI, country lead and senior academic on research projects focused on management capability development in SMEs, representing close to €1m in direct research funding since 2006. Funding authorities include; US Federal Reserve, Fulbright, INTERREG and Failte Ireland (National Tourism Development Authority). As chair of RIKON, I help lead a team of researchers and students who work closely with academic and business leaders in the design and delivery of innovative research interventions, and in the exploration of new approaches to capability development and management practice.
Supervisor and mentor on student research projects that have generated over €800,000 in funding since 2008. Supervised 20 research students to successful completion, including 9 PhDs and 7 DBAs. Currently on the supervisory team of 6 PhD candidates. Mentor to Marie Curie- Irish Research Council Elevate Postdoctoral Fellow (2014-18).

Contributed to the securing of €6m+ research funding and a further €2m commercial funding through the RIKON research group in the last decade, encompassing senior academic roles in INTERREG, SFI and Failte Ireland research projects and as researcher/ research supervisor/ mentor on Irish Research Council, IOTI, Failte Ireland, Strand 1, NAIRTL, Enterprise Ireland and Royal Irish Academy-funded projects.
