Biography
Dr Keary is a graduate of NUI Galway, where she obtained a BSc (Hons) in Experimental Physics in 1987. On graduation she joined Waterford Institute of Technology as a physics lecturer where she also completed her doctorate in 1997 in the area of Polymer Science. Her PhD thesis was titled "The kinetics of the Anionic/Zwitterionic polymerization of Ethyl 2-Cyanopenta-2,4-Dienoate". Claire undertook a position as postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles from 1998 – 1999. She returned to WIT in 1999 where her responsibilities encompass the design, development and delivery of course work across a range of disciplines and departments within WIT. Claire is joint course leader on the BSc (Hons) in Physics for Modern Technology. She has also been involved in research in a number of different areas.
Dr Keary has taught on a wide range of undergraduate courses in the science, engineering and computing areas. Module titles have included:

Dr Keary has research experience in the field of polymer science and in optics. She has co-supervised two PhD students in the area of fibre optic sensing with the Optics Research Group at WIT.
Her current research interests are in the area of gamma ray spectroscopy and environmental radioactivity monitoring.
Dr Keary is a member of the Institute of Physics and the Irish Association of Physicists in Medicine.
Dr. Keary is actively involved in promoting physics in the South East region on an on-going basis. This includes; hosting lectures, seminars and workshops for secondary school students at WIT; school visits; meetings with physics and career guidance teachers; and interactions with the Institute of Physics (IOP) in Ireland.
