Biography

Chris has been a lecturer at Waterford Institute of Technology since 2001 lecturing mainly in French and Italian. His qualifications include: Bachelor of Arts in Applied Languages (French and Italian), a Masters Degree in Business Studies and a PhD in Italian Lexicography. Chris carried out his doctoral studies under the supervision of Professor Paolo Acquaviva in the Department of Italian at the National University of Ireland (Dublin) from 2004-2009. His thesis focused on the lexicographical treatment of idiomatic expressions in Bilingual Italian-English Dictionaries from the sixteenth century to the twentieth century.

In his 22 year lecturing career, Chris has taught French and Italian as well as supervising research at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Chris has served on many instituitional committees, most notably the WIT Research Strategy Committee, the HR4RS Committee and was a member of the Humanities Research Strand on the Committee for the Transition to a Technological University.

In addition to lecturing duties, Chris held the role of Language Leader in the Department of Arts (2019-2022). His duties in this role included visits to secondary schools in the South-East region to promote language learning, sourcing funding from Languages Connect and hosting promotional events on the topic of language learning.

Chris' research interests are in the area of lexicography, phraseology and lexicology. His primary research specialisation is in the treatment of phraseology in bilingual dictionaries and he has published a number of peer-reviewed publications in this field and spoken at various international conferences and symposia on this topic. Chris has successfully received funding from prominent research funding bodies such as the Royal Irish Academy, the Irish Research Council and the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland. In 2016, he was a recipient of the Warren N. Cordell Lexicography Fellowship from Indiana State University. From 2013-2017, he was an Irish Management Committee Representative on the Pan-European COST Action IS1305 on E-Lexicography. In this time, he organised the WG4 Training School on Lexicography and Lexicology held at Waterford Institute of Technology in June 2017.

Chris is an active contributor on language topics in the media and has contributed to the Irish Times, RTE Brainstorm and is a regular contributor for a number of national and regional radio stations. 

Chris teaching duties focus primarily on the French language and his core lecturing delivery being in French language, French grammar and French oral classes. He has also taught Italian language, Research Methods and supervised several undergraduate dissertations on topics in Hospitality and Tourism.

Research Network Projects

From January 2014 to September 2017, Chris was a Management Committee member of EU COST Action European Network of E-Lexicography (ENEL) IS1305. In this network of over 200 participants, Chris was affiliated to Working Group (WG) 4 which focused on aspects of lexicographical and lexicological reference. During the term of the project, Chris gave presentations to other WG4 members on Aspects of Lexical Variation (Bolzano/Bozen, July 2015; Vienna, February 2015, Barcelona, March 2016) and was a co-founder of the Landlex Research Group. He contributed to Landlex presentations in Lisbon, November 2016 and Budapest, 2017 and was the organiser of the WG4 Training School on Lexicology and Lexicography held at Waterford Institute of Technology from 7-9 June 2017. In September 2017 (Leiden, The Netherlands), Chris delivered the final presentation on the output of Landlex and the sub-group of Language Variation during the closing meeting of the COST Action IS1305.
