Biography

Anne Marie McGrath is a Graduate of Waterford Institute of Technology having graduated with a Bachelor of Business Studies degree in 1988 one of the first group from this course. A natural progression was to embark on a career in retail management as Anne Marie grew up and worked in her family’s retail sports business.

In 1996 Anne Marie graduated from The Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business, University College Dublin with an MBS in Human Resource Management and Chartered Membership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) . This return to education followed a successful eight years career in retail management during which Anne Marie managed a number of business start-ups, mentored new business enterprises and  managed staff for a large Irish craft and fashion retailer chain,

In 1997, Anne Marie joined the lecturing staff of the School of Business as a Lecturer in Human Resource Management. Since then Anne Marie has lectured on a wide range of programmes within the School and across the wider Institute.

Anne Marie's teaching interests are in the area of human resource management with a specialism developed in employment law, teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate. She qualified in 2012 as a Certified Civil Mediator.

Anne Marie is currently stream leader for the Human Resource Management Stream on the Bachelor of Business (Hons.) programme in Waterford Institute of Technology and is the CIPD tutor on the Bachelor of Business (Hons) and Masters in Business HRM.

In 2014 Anne Marie was elected onto the Institute’s 7th Academic Council and is a member of the teaching and learning subcommittee of this council.

Throughout her career Anne Marie has engaged in Continuous Professional Development and has been a member and chair of the South-east branch of the CIPD.

Currently I lecture in human resource management and employment law across a range of programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level. These include the Masters in Business (MBS), Bachelor of Business Studies (Hons.), Higher Certificate in Business Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of Science in Retail Management.

I supervise dissertations at both undergraduate and postgraduate level on the BBS and MBS programmes. I have lectured in the area of enterprise and management and delivered workshops in Managing Human Resources on the South East Enterprise Platform Programme (SEEP) and the Masters of Business Administration (MBA).

I am very student centered in my teaching style and am working towards developing life-long learners who have the skills and competencies that are required in the business world and broader society.

I focus on practical skills development and have incorporated this through case studies and role-plays on various human resource and employment law modules. On the postgraduate employment law module a 'live tribunal' has been very successful with students preparing and defending an employment law case in front of an external panel. These tribunals are attended by the undergraduate students providing development opportunities across the student population. Mediations skills are also taught as part of the MBS modules.

As stream leader on the BBS (HRM ) and previously programme leader on the BA in Human Resource Management I have developed a network of HR professionals through the South east Branch of the CIPD. This provides opportunities for my students to attend and network at CIPD events while providing a rich resource of guest speakers and professional input for my modules.
