South East Technological University (SETU) reaches new heights as the new university welcomes the Garmin G1000 flight simulator. The Garmin G1000 flight simulator is based in the SETU Carlow campus in the Centre for Aerospace Engineering building. SETU is the only technological university in Ireland to have a Garmin G1000 flight simulator. The flight simulator allows aerospace engineering students experience a realistic flight environment on a range of subjects from flight dynamics to avionic systems in a safe flight environment. The flight simulator will enhance the student learning experience within the undergraduate programmes in B.Eng. in Aircraft Systems, B.Eng. in Aerospace Engineering, B.Sc. in Pilot Studies and the taught postgraduate programme, M.Eng. in Flight Test Engineering.
The Garmin G1000 flight simulator is an integrated avionics system found in a variety of light aircrafts. This simulator replicates the primary flight display found in Cessna 182T, 172S, 172R, 206H, and Beechcraft Baron G58 aircraft. It can be set up to work with piston, turboprop, and jet engines. Programme director of the Aerospace Engineering course, Dr Gerard Gibbs, believes the Garmin G1000 flight simulator will be a great benefit to the new university, “The addition of the flight simulator will transform the teaching experience for both staff and students at the Centre for Aerospace Engineering at the Carlow campus”.
