Alan Franklin graduated from Pharmacy Technician Studies at SETU's campus in Carlow in 2012. Today, he works as a claims and ARC manager for PHX Ireland (United Drug Wholesale and Lloyds Pharmacy group). He says his progression at his current place of employment would not be possible without the positive third level learning environment he experienced.

"I can’t speak highly enough about the learning environment and the willingness of lecturers to go the extra mile to help every student succeed."

Going the extra mile

Having graduated from both the Carlow campus (Pharmacy Technician) and the Wexford Campus (Business Management), I can’t speak highly enough about the learning environment and the willingness of lecturers to go the extra mile to help every student succeed.

Both environments were full of very personable people and didn’t take much adjustment coming from secondary school which I know can be the case in some colleges.

Tasked with growing a customer base

I joined United Drug Wholesale in 2021 as an ARC business development manager. ARC is a claim tool for independent pharmacies and my role was to grow the customer base, complete claim reviews/system training and develop the tool further taking customer needs and my own claiming experience into account.

It also required me to keep up to date with the ever-changing landscape that is Pharmacy claims.

Moving onto a bigger role

In 2022 my role was expanded to include the Lloyds Pharmacy group as Claims manager, this involves managing the Lloyd’s claim team, analysing and presenting claim performance to the Lloyd’s senior management team monthly highlighting the key issues within the group from a claim perspective.

The role of a Pharmacy Technician is ever-evolving and I have been lucky enough to have gained experience in some very niche roles outside of community pharmacy that when I was in college I never would.
