South East Technological University (SETU) held its annual Computing Showcase 2023 at SETU’s Kilkenny Road Campus in Carlow this week. The showcase is in its twelfth year and is proudly sponsored by Netwatch Ireland and UK, world leader in proactive video monitoring. This is the first showcase to take place onsite since 2019 and it has provided an opportunity to celebrate the best-in-class of SETU’s final-year computing students’ projects at honours and masters level.

The showcase creates a chance for industry leaders to witness demonstrations from student projects in cybercrime and IT security, software engineering, IT management, interactive digital art and design, and data science; exhibiting the extensive range of ideas and technologies employed by SETU students. The event is also an excellent networking opportunity for industry employers to engage with soon-to-be SETU graduates who are among the strongest emerging talent in the IT and computing spaces.

Key to the success of the showcase is the continued support of Netwatch, a world-leader in proactive video monitoring with offices based locally in Carlow. Netwatch uses industry-leading detection and monitoring technologies including wireless perimeter security, GPS tracking, audio visual detection and personal protection equipment to protect individuals and premises. While the company has garnered global success since its Carlow-based beginnings some twenty years ago, it remains a strong supporter of the local area, evidenced in its continued support of the Computing Showcase and SETU graduates.

Simon Walshe, Software Development Manager at Netwatch Group commented, “The showcase is something we have come to look forward to each year. The Netwatch Research and Development department is made up of many past students of these streams, and to see the standard of projects coming along is so encouraging. Looking at the wide array of projects working on machine learning, cyber security, games, and modern web applications is so relevant in today’s world. We get to work first hand with some of the students through our internships at Netwatch. Witnessing the positive impact these students have on our business and seeing the projects that are presented by them here, the graduates from SETU are people you want on your team. We'd like to congratulate all the students involved and wish them the very best of luck in the future."

Nigel Whyte, Head of Department of Computing at SETU’s Kilkenny Road Campus in Carlow stated, "I’m very proud of the calibre of projects on show here today by our computing students. SETU graduates are consistently in high demand among employers, with a reputation for being highly collaborative and industry-ready after their time at the university. I’m grateful also for the continued support of our sponsors, Netwatch. Having the support of a globally successful company, with its origins here in the south east region, is extremely encouraging and inspiring for our students. I wish all our final-year students every success as they embark on their careers.”

The showcase culminated in a presentation of awards from Netwatch to students whose project presentations excelled in the following categories: Best in Games Development, Andrew Greenslade; Best in Interactive Digital Art and Design, Kinga Pestka; Best in Software Development, Shane Doherty; Best in Cybercrime and IT Security, Billy Irvin; and Best in IT Management, Nathan Calnan.
