SETU and Women’s Collective Ireland (WCI) celebrated the success of their recent collaboration during a Presentation of Certificates ceremony at the Wexford campus.
The collaboration saw 17 members of WCI staff complete the University’s Certificate in Advocacy course.
Lifelong learning
The collaborative effort came about between SETU’s School of Education and Lifelong learning via its ‘Supporting Family Carers across Ireland’ project. This Higher Education Authority (HEA) funded initiative facilitated the provision of 17 learner places for WCI staff to undertake the University’s level 6 advocacy course.
Supporting communities
The initiative aimed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to enhance their advocacy work, and to enhance the support they can offer to the wider communities they serve via the work of WCI. Course participants acquired skills that will strengthen WCI’s mission of empowering women and advocating for gender equality across Ireland.

Tool for change
Speaking about the collaboration, Dr Helen Murphy, SETU’s Head of School of Education and Lifelong Learning, said, “We are delighted with the positive outcome of this initiative. Advocacy is a powerful tool for social change, and it has been inspiring to see the dedication of WCI participants throughout the course. SETU is committed to continuing our support for community-based learning and development.”
Real-world skills
Miriam Holt CEO at WCI added, “This collaboration with SETU has been invaluable for our members. Many of the women who completed the course have already applied their skills in real-world advocacy efforts, making a tangible impact in their communities. We look forward to exploring further opportunities for partnership with SETU.”
