SETU Music School was delighted to host two Schools’ Choral Days on Friday 3rd and 10th March in the Chapel on SETU’s College Street Campus.

With over 600 children from primary and secondary schools in Waterford City, Ferrybank, Tramore and Clonmel attending over the two days, the event is a key outreach activity at the Music School. The school choirs were also joined by the six choirs from the SETU Choral Programme at the Music School.

The day involved a group warm-up followed by performances from each individual school choir. The children listened and learned from one another, before all combining on stage for a workshop and to perform together.

Choral Programme directors explored various musical elements such as tempo, dynamics, dynamics, diction, tone and timbre.

Lecturers from the Music School visited schools in advance of the days to teach and support the schools in their learning of a group song 'Kusimama' by Jim Papoulis, as well as hosting a teacher education event in the Waterford Education Support Centre for primary school teachers.

Speaking after the event, Dr Richard Coady said, “We would like to acknowledge and thank all the lecturers who work on the Choral Programme for their expertise, the Waterford Education Support Centre for their support of the Schools’ Choral Day and the American composer Jim Papoulis for kindly allowing us to use his music.

“We are already looking forward to the event in 2024!”
