Michael has already found his dream job after college and shares his story of how his experience in South East Technological University (SETU) helped him there.

"As part of this course, you have to do a placement for it. I was doing a psychiatric placement; it was very helpful.... It was a great experience to have and worth the opportunity." SETU graduate, Michael Barcoe

Michael Barcoe recently graduated with a degree of BSc (Hons) in Psychiatric Nursing. He shared with us his experience in SETU and how it has helped him along the way to accomplish his dreams. He is now working in Dublin for a forensic mental health company. He was able to achieve all of this through his time in South East Technological University.

The SETU experience

It is a great experience to have and you should be open to trying new things. When you first get here, everyone is on the same boat, they’re new to this life so there’s nothing to be scared of. At the beginning, everyone is new to this. This is nothing new, it is a great opportunity to make new and long-lasting friends through this. It is easier to connect with others who are going through the same thing as you are.

Course work

As part of this course, you have to do a placement for it. This is a mandatory placement. I did it in Wexford/ and Waterford, on and off for the last four years. I was doing a psychiatric placement; it was very helpful. It was a great experience to have and worth the opportunity. It gave me a great insight into the type of work that’s done.

Classes and lecturers

The classes were small enough and the lecturers were always extremely helpful. The classes were very diverse also, so there was a great diversity in class. Also, outside of class, the Student Union are great for helping out. They have set up a buddy system (Peer2Peer) to help out with people who need it.
