South East Technological University (SETU) is expanding its offering in the area of sustainability by launching the part-time level 9 Certificate in Green & Sustainable Pharmaceutical Production.

The new 10-credit programme, being offered at the Waterford campus, aims to provide understanding, knowledge and skills in greener and more sustainable approaches for the pharmaceutical production sector.

The area of more sustainable and greener pharmaceutical production is currently undergoing significant growth and skilled individuals are required to deliver change to meet national climate targets.

The Department of Science at SETU has a proven record of engaging with industry and designing programmes to meet such industry needs, facilitating staff upskilling and development at masters level.

Head of Department of Science Dr Orla O’Donovan said, “This new course is one of several steps being taken at SETU and in the Department of Science to change to more green and sustainable practices. It is the first full certificate programme at level 9 dedicated to upskilling Industry staff in this highly topical area of sustainability.”

Multi-disciplinary approach

In its curriculum the course will adopt a multi-disciplinary approach and students will gain clear insight into green and sustainable principles, tools and methodologies for the synthesis, analysis, formulation and packaging of pharmaceuticals, including the application of quality management principles and renewable energy technologies. The course will be delivered in a flexible mode with the majority of the content delivered online and will include interactive sessions and variable assessment techniques.

Programme Director Dr Claire Lennon said, “We have developed this programme in direct response to the growing need for the innovative, greener and more sustainable strategies for Industry and to respond to our National Climate targets.”

The Certificate in Green & Sustainable Pharmaceutical Production will complement the existing Postgraduate Diploma / MSc in Analytical Science with Quality Management and is offered as an elective on this programme.

Highly relevant programme

The MSc Programme Directors, Dr Richie Ryan and Dr. Mike Kinsella said: “This new Certificate is a highly relevant programme and will add significantly to the current offering we have in the part-time Postgraduate Diploma/Masters in Analytical Science with Quality Management. It will also serve to further embed this highly important area of sustainability and green practices into our current level 9 programmes in science and will be a strong asset to the students who take it.”
