The first book in the Elemental Witches series is available in a number of south east bookshops as well online at Amazon and the Book Depository.

A recent SETU graduate Ryan Cogley, has recently published his first novel under the pen name R.N. Cogley.

The Elemental Witches, tells the story of Anna de Midia, a young law student who must juggle college life with her role as an Elemental Fire Witch-Witch Hunter hybrid.

Although the launch night of The Elemental Witches had to be postponed due to Covid-19 restrictions, The Elemental Witches is available for purchase from Amazon and The Book Centre Waterford and Wexford, and in Red Books Book Shop in St Peter’s Square, Co Wexford.

The SETU effect

Ryan, who holds a BA (Hons) in Psychology from SETU and is hoping to pursue a Research Master's in the area of Forensic Psychology, says his experiences from attending SETU heavily influenced many aspects of the book’s storyline, particularly the setting and certain college activities. These experiences gave him a distinct outlook on the college perspective, enhancing his ability to engage with college-aged readers.

Since its publication, The Elemental Witches has received numerous 5-star reviews and has reached the bestsellers section in the author’s local Book Centre.

Creative pursuits

“It was incredible to see something I wrote for sale. I never thought I would get this far,” said Ryan. “I still can’t believe it’s all real. I will be forever grateful for all the encouraging comments and reviews both my book and I have received,” he says.

“This is a great achievement as it shows his versatility as a writer and his ability to write creatively,” said Dr Sinead Conneely, Law Lecturer at SETU.

After numerous rejections from Publishing Houses over the concerns of being a ‘first time author’, Ryan decided to go down the self-publishing route. Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) proved to be the best fit for Ryan.

Amazon experience

According to Ryan, the process was very easy to do. Amazon provides numerous video tutorials for both the publication of E-Books and Paperbacks which makes the self-publishing process very achievable. Further, although the author takes on a lot of work when going down the self-publishing route, the author can keep all the rights to their book and can even pick their own cover. Amazon KDP provides a plethora of premade covers, but Ryan decided to enlist the help of his family in this regard by getting his twin brother, Brandon, to design the gripping cover.

With the tremendous help of Red Books in Wexford, Ryan was able to see his book for sale on the shelves of a bookstore for the first time. With growing confidence from the success of his book in Red Books, Ryan branched out, through email, to other bookshops in his area, particularly the Book Centre Wexford where The Elemental Witches is now a bestseller.

Since its publication, Ryan has made a Facebook page for his book and has recently had an article written about his book’s publication in the Wexford People newspaper.

Ryan invites people to give The Elemental Witches a like on Facebook for updates on its progress and for teasers from The Elemental Witches: Croí Draíochta (Book 2 in the Elemental Witches Series).
