Coordinated by Calmast, SETU's STEM Engagement Centre, with colleagues from the University's Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment, Engineers Ireland's South East Region, and Engineering the South East industry cluster.

This year’s festival will kick off on Saturday, 1 March and continue on to Friday, 7 March 2025.

World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development is celebrated worldwide on 4 March each year.

Festival Agenda

K'Nex Engineering Week Quiz

  • Event open to: 5th and 6th class primary school students. 
    *Limited to 4-5 schools, one class per school*
  • Venue - Barrow Centre, Kilkenny Road Campus.
  • Time - 9:30am to 12:00pm
  • Info: The K’NEX Challenge is an exciting introduction to the world of engineering. The K’NEX Challenge model kits will allow students to design and build an engineering model of a real-life invention – all of which have a use in our everyday lives. Can you design and build the biggest, the strongest, the fastest…. to get to the top of the leaderboard?

    This competition aspires to bring back the awe of discovery and the fun of creativity in Engineering by encouraging children to think of new concepts and interesting inventions.

TY Engineering Week Quiz

  • Event open to: Transition year and 5th year secondary school students. Requirement: *Team of 4*
  • Venue - Cork Road Campus.
  • Time - 10:30am to 12:00pm
  • Info: Pit your wits against Transition Year peers and compete for great prizes in this ever-popular annual challenge for secondary school TY Students from schools across the South East region. Questions are STEM related and generally of Junior Cert level with some fun round thrown in.
  • The project is supported by generous funding from SETU, Calmast and Engineers Ireland. Students will need to download an APP on their smartphone to participate.

Advanced Manufacturing Facilities Tour (04 March – 07 March)

  • Event open to: Secondary school students.
  • Venue – Applied Technology Building, Cork Road Campus.
  • Time – Confirmed upon booking.
  • Info: Engineering students at SETU prepare for industry using state of the art equipment. In this tour of the facilities your students will see and learn about the equipment and how it is used in advanced manufacturing in industry.

Wind Power Workshop

  • Event open to: Secondary school students.
  • Venue - Cork Road Campus.
  • Time - 2 sessions: 9.30am and 11.30am
  • Info: Climate change is the biggest challenge facing the planet and all living things on it (including us). This workshop is designed to learn how to harness wind power. Each group will manipulate small éoliens and wind blowers to see which parameters affect their electricity conversion. The students will calculate the power of their wind turbine.
  • Event open to: 5th and 6th class primary school students. 
    *Limited to one class of 30 students max*
  • Venue – C201, Kilkenny Road Campus.
  • Time - 2 sessions: 9.30am and 11.30am
  • Info: Learn about the world of Robots with SETU Senior Lecturer, Dr Dorel Picovici. 

Pencils and calculators needed.

Robotic Challenge 

  • Event open to: 5th and 6th class primary school students. 
    *Limited to one class of 30 students max*
  • Venue – C201, Kilkenny Road Campus.
  • Time - 2 sessions: 9.30am and 11.30am
  • Info: Learn about the world of Robots with SETU Senior Lecturer, Dr Dorel Picovici.

Additive Manufacturing: 3D Printing and the way of the future. 

  • Event open to: Secondary school students.
  • Venue – SEAM Centre, Cork Road Campus.
  • Time -
    • Session #1: 9.30am to 10.30am
    • Session #2: 11.00am to 12.00pm
    • Session #3: 12.30pm to 13.30pm
  • Info: Additive manufacturing (3D printing) is changing the way in which things are made, and what it is possible to make. We are at an early stage in this revolution and this event will show your pupils what is now state of the art and what will be the opportunities over next 10 years.

‘Engineering as a Career’ Event

  • Event open to: Secondary school students.
  • Venue – Kilkenny Road Campus.
  • Time – 11:00am to 12:30pm
  • Info: A panel of Engineers from various disciplines and from across the southeast region will speak about their experiences in Engineering and their journey on their current career path.

  • Event open to: Transition year, 5th and 6th year secondary school students.
  • Venue – Auditorium and Atrium, Cork Road Campus.
  • Time – T
    • Talks: 10:00am
    • Exhibition: 11:00am
  • Info: A panel of Engineers from various disciplines and from across the southeast region will speak about their experiences in engineering and their journey on their current career path.

The event is organised in two parts: a presentation, where different SETU students will talk about their fields and work placement, and an exhibition, where students can ask questions and have a look at the different companies.

Careers event starts at 10:00am.

Tours of Advanced Manufacturing Facilities will be organised before or after the event until 2.30 PM
