The Irish Association for International Education (IAIE) is pleased to announce its inaugural conference, Internationalisation in Higher Education – Looking to the Future, with the support of the Government of Ireland Department of Further and Higher Education Research, Innovation and Skills (DFHERIS), the Higher Education Authority (HEA) and Education in Ireland. This in-person event aims to explore forward-thinking strategies, innovations, and partnerships that will shape the future of global engagement in higher education.

In a rapidly evolving world, internationalisation in higher education faces multiple transformative challenges and opportunities. As we navigate changes in technology, policy, and societal priorities, this conference seeks to envision the next chapter in global education, enhancing and fostering inclusive, resilient, and impactful strategies for the decades ahead. 

This conference welcomes academics, researchers, university leaders, international office staff, policymakers, and practitioners committed to advancing the future of internationalisation in higher education.

We are delighted to welcome three of the world's leading experts in the area of internationalisation in higher education as keynote speakers who will address some of the pressing challenges facing internationalisation in higher education today.

Conference Goals

This conference will: 

  • Examine emerging trends and future scenarios for internationalisation in higher education.
  • Showcase innovative practices that redefine global collaboration and student experiences.
  • Facilitate dialogue among stakeholders on shaping policies for sustainable internationalisation.

Elspeth Jones Author

An introduction to internationalisation of Higher Education with a broad focus on curriculum and sustainability

Elspeth Jones is Emerita Professor of the Internationalisation of Higher Education, Leeds Beckett University, UK, and founding editor of the influential book series, Internationalization in Higher Education (Routledge). She led the university’s ‘Worldwide Horizons’ drive, which saw internationalisation as fundamental for all students and staff. She has worked with a range of organisations across six continents. Her interests include internationalisation of the curriculum; inclusivity and ‘interculturalisation’; and the role of languages in internationalisation. She was awarded the inaugural Medal of Lifetime Achievement in Transnational Research (Noam Chomsky Global Connections Awards) and the EAIE Award for Excellence in Research.

Anthony Manning

Internationalisation of the curriculum at home in practice and with a range of examples

Dr Anthony Manning is Dean for Global and Lifelong Learning at the University of Kent. He is also Co-chair of the UUKi Working Group for Internationalisation at Home. Anthony is responsible for the development, implementation and review of Global and Lifelong Learning activity which includes internationalisation of the curriculum, global engagement activity, cross-curricular international pathways to higher education, English for Academic Purposes and multi-disciplinary degree apprenticeships. Anthony is also a Principal Fellow of AdvanceHE and a National Teaching Fellow. He is the current Chair of British Accreditation Council’s (BAC’s) Accreditation Committee and is a member of the British Council’s English Language Advisory Group. Anthony’s publications focus on Internationalisation of the curriculum, globally-focused education, academic literacy, language assessment and English for Specific Purposes.

Andrew Gordon is an award-winning social entrepreneur and a leading voice in global education, edtech, inclusive student success, and workforce development. With deep expertise at the intersection of global education, technology, inclusion, and student success, Andrew collaborates with higher education institutions, non-profits, and businesses to develop strategies that align global engagement with student and professional success. His work focuses on equipping institutions and organizations with the tools to develop globally competent talent, enhance student experiences, and prepare all graduates for success in an interconnected world.

Submission Types 

Submissions are invited for research and practitioner based papers (20 minutes) and poster presentations. 

Individual and group submissions are welcome.

Poster boards are in landscape format, and authors can make use of the full dimensions of 1800 mm width × 1000 mm height.

Please provide a 250–300-word abstract that includes the title, themes addressed, and author information (name, institution, and contact details). Submissions must be sent to [email protected] by 21st April 2025.
