The Certificate in Personal Development is a two-year Level 6, 20 Credit, part-time on campus course.
Programme Aims
This programme aims to offer Adults with Intellectual Disability an opportunity to experience University life and the student experience at higher education, in the same way their siblings and typical adult peers do. This programme is designed specifically within the subject areas and pitched at the pace of learning to enable the student to build a skillset that will equip them to live an enhanced life through experiencing learning in a variety of exciting and interesting modules.
Teaching and Learning Approaches
IIn line with best practice in adult learning, the programme team will adopt a person centred approach using a variety of interactive teaching methods. The emphasis will be on the reflective, experiential, and participative.
Unique Features
This is a part-time campus-based programme. This course will be delivered in SETU Waterford campus across a number of different departments to provide for variety and choice in module selection. The proposed award will be delivered in flexible mode consisting of two four-hour morning slots, on site in SETU Waterford campus. This flexible mode of delivery offers opportunities for adult learners to study these modules in a way that best suits their needs.
Assessment of the Certificate in Personal Development award is 100% continuous assessment. This assessment style has been adopted as it better meets the learning needs of the adult learners of this course
Certificate in Personal Development Year 1 – 10 Credits each module is 5 Credits
All modules are largely beneficial for personal growth and development. They propose to build the requisite life skills required for individuals with an intellectual disability to live a good life.
Module 1: Communication Skills
- Introduction to Communication, exploring different types of communication in different contexts
- Understanding verbal and non-verbal communication
- Opportunity to apply communication such as role play, workplace scenarios and simulation with interpersonal communication
- Appropriate communication
- Building self-confidence & self esteem
Module 2: Physical Health and Well Being
- Body health and fitness, working through an exercise plan for fitness and physical health.
- Body and mind alignment, minding mental health as well as physical health including techniques and activities for appropriate expression of self.
Skills for life Year 2 – 10 credits will form a choice from two of the three 5 Credit Modules.
Module 1: Arts Module (Art, Literacy and Music)
Module 2: Culinary Skills and Money Management
Module 3: Computer Skills- Assistive Technology, Social media
Students must be over 18 years.
Students must be able to attend SETU Waterford Campus independent of the college.
Student must have a mild to moderate intellectual Disability.
While this is a standalone, special purpose award, the applicability of learning for the student enhances possibilities for employment and increased health and lifestyle outcomes as a result of undertaking study on this programme.
On successful completion of this award graduates maybe considered for future lecturing roles on the Certificate in Enhancing life Skills Level 6 Course.
