Neil van Dokkum is a Law Lecturer in the Department of Applied Arts, School of Humanities, Waterford Institute of Technology since his arrival in Ireland from South Africa in 2002.

Whilst in South Africa, Neil worked in a leading firm of solicitors from 1987-1992, before qualifying as a barrister in 1992. Neil specialises in employment law, medical negligence law, family law and child protection law. He also dabbles in EU law (procurement and energy). Neil retired from practice in 2002 to take up a full-time lecturing post. He was awarded the national award of “Teaching Hero” in 2014, 2016 and again in 2021. He has published three books in Ireland, “Nursing Law for Irish Students (2005); “Evidence” (2007); and “Nursing Law for Students in Ireland” (2011). He is an accredited and practising mediator and he has written and taught extensively in the fields of dispute resolution and conflict management.

Neil loves to teach, and this is evidenced by his three 'Teaching Hero' Awards. As he moves towards the end of his career, he has become interested in putting names and labels on the methods he uses in the lecture room, and to that end he is studying various modules on the MEd in Teaching and Learning (purely for CPD purposes!).
