Biography
I am an experienced Assistant Director of Nursing/Site Manager with a Master's in Leadership (RCSI 2014-2016). My clinical background is in Emergency Nursing, I have over 25 years as an ED CNM2 & CNM3 with a demonstrated history of working in the acute setting in healthcare. Skilled in Crisis and Emergency Management,I deliver clinical education within acute healthcare settings: Manchester & Irish Children's Triage, BLS, ACLS, advanced nursing practices to both undergraduate & post-graduate nurses.
I deliver education in nursing, to undergraduate degree nursing students and postgraduate nurses (I'm currently undertaking my PNE in Nursing Education- 2022/2023 in The University of Galway), also to undergradute level 7 and Level 8 social care students. I have a strong interest in and advocate for education, advancement in professional development, evidence-based teaching & learning. Blended and experiential learning to compliment didactic lecturing styles, incorporating differing styles of teaching and learning are strategies I enjoy bringing to the students. I'm passionate about enabling their growth and development with a strong emphasis on the core values of nursing, health and social care as the foundation for learning and supporting their journey to achieve their possible best selves.
I have been teaching throughout my nursing career, I have rolled out many education programmes in Emergency Nursing and nursing practices in clinical settings. My formal teaching journey began in 2012, teaching QQI Level 5 & Level 6 in both Health and Social Care. I have worked with a number of ETB's over the years, delivering all 8 modules of the healthcare support workers programme.
I undertook a Masters in Leadership, completing it in 2016 and from there I continued to deliver education both locally within the various hospitals I have worked in & within the hospital groups. I am currently undertaking a Post Graduate Diploma in Nursing (Education) in The University of Galway and am delighted to be working,since October 2022, undertaking teaching hours within the School of Nursing in the Department of Health Sciences and in the School of Early Childhood & Social Care in the Department of Humanities.
My career extends from training in Whipps Cross Hospital, London in the early 1990's to moving into Emergency Nursing quite soon after qualifying. The next 25 years of my career brought me from an ED RGN to an ED CNM2 and CNM3 (for a short time) in both the UK & Ireland. I then migrated into Nursing and Site Management, which is my current permanent position. Leadership, leading, managing, facilitating and enabling education and development of practices are something I have worked conscientiously and deliberately to achieve throughout my career.
I have vast experience in emergency clinical nursing and ED management, crisis management, conflict management, interventional strategies to problem solve. I have rolled out many education programmes in the hospitals I have worked in, introduced quality improvement initiatives, introduced the role of the healthcare assistant in the Emergency department I was interim CNM3 of. I am a safe, competent and confident emergency nurse with strong team values. I am personable, fair and equitable with excellent communication skills, I promote active engagement with staff, patients and all stakeholders in the organisation and carry out my role with professionalism, fairness with an inherent belief in the principles nursing, care delivery and the core values of the profession of nursing, health and social care.
