Biography
Hazel Finlay is a social care lecturer in the Department of Social Care and Early Childhood Studies. She holds a BSc in Property Valuation Management, a BA in Applied Social Studies in Social Care, a BA (Hons) in Applied Social Studies in Social Care and and a Master of Arts (Research) on the topic of Human Security and Nurse Migration. Hazel has eight years professional experience working in residential care with adults with intellectual disabilities and young people in care. For the past fifteen years Hazel has been lecturing at SETU with a special interest in Irish social policy, migration, disability, diversity and inclusion, and social care work. Hazel is also a member of the Ending Sexual Violence, Prevention and Support Committee and policy sub group, and the Athen Swan Self Assessment Team at SETU. Hazel is the current TUI Branch Equality Officer at SETU Waterford.
Hazel lectures a broad range of modules across the social care level 7 and level 8 programmes. Subjects include social policy, reflective practice, introduction to social care practice, exploring contemporary social care issues, disability, leadership and managment and practice placement. Since 2009 Hazel has worked as a placement lecturer, supporting and supervising students who are undertaking their practice placements in social care agencies. Hazel also supported the development of placements further by sharing the role of Acting Placement Coordinator from March 2019 to Janurary 2020, and leading practice placement preparations for our application for approval by an external body.

Hazel was previously course leader for the BA (Hons) in Social Care Practice (June 2018 to June 2022). Her role as Course Leader on the BA (H) in Social Care Practice involved the day to day management of the programme in addition to leading preparations for the 2019 School Review and SETU's 2019 application for approval by an external body.
Since 2009 Hazel has worked as a placement lecturer, supporting and supervising students who are undertaking their practice placements in social care agencies. Hazel was an external examiner for the BA (H) in Social Care Programme at Dundalk Institute of Technology from September 2020 to June 2023.
