Legal Experience

I have advised a wide range of international and domestic clients on a variety of commercial and general matters. Selected examples of my work include:

Sport

Advising Fujisankei Inc. on various issues arising from its agreement with Formula One Administration to broadcast the FIA Formula One Championship in Japan;

Advising The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on a range of broadcasting rights issues relating to its domestic and international television and radio agreements;

Advising Virgin Mobile on its sponsorship and supply agreement with the Jordan Formula One team;
Advising the ECB on its Test Match and "Twenty/20" sponsorship arrangements with npower;
Advising Sunderland AFC on various issues relating to its kit sponsorship and supply agreement with Nike;
Advising Liverpool FC on its exploitation of mobile technology rights;
Advising the ECB on its exploitation of mobile telephony and broadband rights;
Drafting a sponsorship and supply agreement for Adidas and the Banesto cycling team;
Advising the ECB on its various sponsorship arrangements with Cheltenham & Gloucester;
Advising Fujisankei Inc. on various matters relating to its naming rights agreement for the Japanese Formula One Grand Prix;
Advising the ECB on a variety of employment law issues relating to the central contracting of England cricket players;
Advising The Racecourse Association on a variety of matters relating to its constitutional documentation;
Advising BT plc on a promotional agreement with Ondigital relating to the coverage of Premier League football matches;
Advising the ECB in relation to the creation of a nation-wide network of cricket academies;
Advising Sunderland AFC on various issues relating to the transfer of overseas players;
Drafting several consultancy agreements for the ECB in relation to its on-line commercial exploitation and the marketing of the "Twenty/20" Cup;
Advising Sports and Outdoor Media Limited on its perimeter advertising agreements;
Drafting internet linking agreements for Coral Eurobet and various search engines and websites;
Drafting internet advertising agreements for Coral Eurobet and various websites;
Drafting a branding agreement between the ECB and a company specialising in interactive applications and games for television programmes; and
Drafting a media management agreement between Ascot Racecourse and a public relations company.

 

Broadcasting

Advising Spellbound Entertainment on the protection and commercial exploitation of various animation characters;
Drafting Contestants agreements for Channel 4 television programme "House Auction";
Advising The Children's Company on its engagement documentation for the second series of "Ripley and Scuff";
Advising the BBC on the creation and exploitation of theme park rides based on a television series concept;

Advising on various broadcasting and betting regulatory matters relating to the creation of an interactive digital television betting channel;

Drafting a carriage agreement for an interactive news channel on cable and satellite systems;
Drafting several ITC satellite television service licence applications;
Advising on various broadcasting and media matters relating to proposed IPO;
Advising an international broadcaster on various issues relating to the carriage of its channels in Eastern Europe; and
Carrying out a due diligence review of carriage agreements for The Extreme Sports Channel.

Film

Part of team involved in carrying out extensive due diligence into film financing litigation.
Drafting and advising client on artist agreements for an Anglo-Spanish co-production;
Drafting an investment agreement for the production funding of a film; and
Involved in advising client on various issue relating to the financing of an Anglo-New Zealand co-production.

Music

Part of team that undertook extensive due diligence review of artists agreements, production agreements, catalogue licences and other music related agreements for planned merger involving EMI; and
Drafting and negotiating documentation relating to the personal appearance of well known musicians at corporate functions.

Event Management:  All The Queen's Horses (16-18 May 2002)

I was solely responsible for advising the event organiser on all matters relating to a specially created event to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee, which included:

Drafting, negotiating and concluding domestic and European broadcasting agreements with the BBC, RTBF and ARD (Studio Hamburg);
Drafting and negotiating DVD and video agreements;
Drafting and negotiating several licensing agreements for the production of a wide range of commemorative merchandise including Jaeger LeCoultre:
Drafting and negotiating several concession agreements;
Drafting and negotiating event programme and book publishing agreements;
Drafting and negotiating a corporate hospitality agreement with Keith Prowse;
Advising on an agreement with the Ministry of Defence; and
Advising on various insurance, intellectual property rights and participation issues relating to the event.

Legal Secondment: The Discovery Channel (Jan 2002 – April 2002)

I was seconded to the in-house legal team of Discovery Communications Europe, producers of various television channels including: The Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, Discovery Sci-Trek, Discovery Wings and Discovery Health. Notable examples of my work include:

Programming

Drafting, negotiating and concluding numerous commissioning agreements for original programming;
Drafting, negotiating and concluding numerous co-production agreements for original programming;
Drafting, negotiating and concluding numerous acquisition agreements with domestic and overseas broadcasters for ready-made programming;
Drafting, negotiating and concluding several programme distribution agreements for back-end distribution of commissioned and co-produced programming;
Drafting and advising on several “pilot” programme short form agreements;
Drafting a signing and audio description agreement;
Drafting and negotiating several dubbing agreements with Eastern European language houses;
Drafting and advising on several programme presenters and voice over contracts.

Channel Distribution

Drafting, negotiating and concluding numerous cable distribution agreements in Central and Eastern Europe and Scandinavia;

Miscellaneous

Drafting short form ad-sales agency agreement in respect of Eastern Europe agent;
Advising on various regulatory issues relating to website competitions, on air competitions and off-air competitions;
Drafting and negotiating video on demand licence agreement with Video Networks Limited;
Drafting, negotiating and concluding an agreement with the BBC relating to the production of a series of promotional trailers;
Drafting airtimes sales agreements;
Drafting and negotiating an advertising agreement with Sky;
Advising on the terms of clip licences, acquisition of archive and release forms;
Drafting, negotiating and concluding several sponsorship and “co-operation” agreements;
Advising on the terms and conditions for various IT contracts; and
Drafting, negotiating and concluding Eastern European Data research contracts.
