Research Interests
I have been involved in active Research since 2003, touching on a variety of fundamental and applied research. These numerous years of research have shaped me as a researcher as well as my interests. My areas of interest are quite diverse and they necessarily cover aspects of pure research as well as applied research. From the basic understanding of what makes a species invasive, to what can we learn from microbes that exist in highly specialised symbiotic relationships. I have extensive experience with model dicot plants (i.d. Arabidopsis, Nicotiana) and non-model dicot and monocot plants (i.d. Potato, Barley, Sorghum, Brachypodium and Setaria viridis) as well as an established availability of genetic resources, encompassing transgenic and mutant lines. My areas of interest therefore can be summarised as being: Fundamental Plant biology, Genetic, genetic engineering and Molecular Biology, Microbiology and plant microbe interaction and Cell wall biology and Phenylpropanoid pathway, plant variety development and Tissue culture.
Engagement and Collaboration
Currently, I am the Principal Investigator involved in a major collaboration with Teagasc, the food authority Ashtown and EnviroCore at SETU Carlow, to fund a PhD programme for a period of four years which commenced November 2017. Teagasc is the leading authority in Agricultural oriented research, with a strong direct application approach.
